Sharing ways to experience & create a sonic ‘haven’ wherein

connection and equality can flourish

Dr Claire Garabedian, PhD, CMP
Cellist
Therapeutic Musician
Social Gerontologist

I’m a professional cellist, baroque cellist and therapeutic musician whose doctoral and postdoctoral research focuses on effectively using the arts – especially music as a means of engagement and thereby connection with people who are living with dementia (including family and friends). I’ve found that music can generate connections and equality among all who are present; listening or playing music together – regardless of any physical/cognitive conditions. As a performer, this is an especially important lesson to keep in mind, because we performers are blessed with a unique task – to reach out, touch, and connect those who’ve graced us with their time and willingness to listen. I’ve enjoyed sharing my knowledge and experiences on some big stages such as the Hay Literature Festival (Wales, UK) and BBC Radio 4 (Saturday Live).

I am committed to employing my unique combination of knowledge, experience, and talent to bring about change, equality, and connection through all of my various offerings. Whether this is through sonically creating a ‘haven’ in which listeners flourish and connect while simply listening to music, providing training and tips to musicians and carers, teaching aspiring cellists and chamber players of all ages and abilities, or collaborating with colleagues towards increasing much-needed evidence regarding the basic human need of connection and comfort, that music and the arts more generally can provide to all people.
