Cello Teaching & Ensemble Coaching

Private Cello Lessons

With decades of teaching experience and having studied with some of the finest (USA) cello pedagogues of our time, I have a considerable amount to offer – accepting students aged 7 and up – anyone who has always wanted to learn to play the cello or is perhaps revisiting the cello after a break (however long). I am also happy to work with cellists or other musicians on how to play baroque music in a historically informed manner.

I am currently a cello instructor within the Edinburgh Council Schools (primary and high school) as well.

I can provide lessons live or via digital media – perhaps for those who are unable to physically attend – or during times of physical distancing.

Teaching Testimonials:
“…Our experience with Claire was always positive and professional…We heartily endorse Claire as a teacher who can instil a love of classical music in her students, and who will enrich the musical experience for them beyond the technical skills of the instrument. [cello student’s mother].”

“… I have been very impressed both by the quality of Ms. Garabedian’s playing and teaching, and also by her enthusiasm…Ms Garabedian is a very warm person who is clearly a dedicated cellist and teacher and I recommend her wholeheartedly. [cello student’s mother].”

“What had the greatest impact on me – was your very holistic approach to teaching and music. Learning music is not some isolated set of skills that you learn, but it is part of the whole person…You were also very good at instilling confidence.  As an adult trying to learn, having someone who fostered confidence and belief was very vital to me…
 [Adult cello student].”

Ensemble Coaching

I have decades of experience coaching and being coached by some of the greatest (USA) musicians of our time. I have also founded and directed to long-running community-based baroque music orchestras (New Baroque Orchestra in Seattle USA 2003-present; St Andrews Baroque Orchestra in St Andrews UK 2009-present). I am happy to coach all chamber ensembles and to also provide historically informed stylistic coaching as well. This is available for musicians of all ages and skill levels.

Ensemble Coaching Testimonials:
“You so very clearly know SO much about baroque music, and this is fantastic. If anyone had been doing the orchestra with any less baroque focus and knowledge, or love, I would not have stayed in it for long…you were really great at educating all of us about baroque music in general, and how it should sound, and string players additionally at a technical level of how to produce that sound…you know what to say to bring out the best in us…
you helped us to make music out of the notes. So overall, what you bring is a lot of knowledge, deep love of music, great enthusiasm, and the skill to convey to people (both individually and in groups, even mixed ability) how they can improve their music-making [founding member of the St Andrews Baroque Orchestra].”
